My Best Friend’s Girl by Dorothy Koomson (friendship)

What would you do for your best friend?

– Hold her hair back while she was throwing up? Yep done that

– Been the shoulder to cry on when the boyfriend treated her like shit? Yes done that

– Listened to how much of a pain in the ass the boss at work is? Yep done that too.

– Become the legal guardian to her child?!

Fortunately I have never been in that position but I almost put my best friend in that position and as a mum the hardest thing you can ever do is ask someone else (no matter who they are) to look after your child because you may not be around to do so yourself. The bond between a mother and a child is precious but the bond between a mother and her daughter is unbreakable.

Girls are usually referred to as daddy’s girls (I should know I am one) but only a mum knows each look of anguish that crosses her daughter’s face. Each smile and what it really says and each hug when it comes out of the blue.

So as a mum knowing this why would you ask someone else to look after your daughter. In Adele’s situation she didn’t have a choice; she was dying and she couldn’t think of a better replacement mum for her Tegan than Ryn. Adele knew no matter what had happened between them Ryn would never turn her back on Tegan. As I continued to read My Best Friend’s Girl the other thing I came to realise is as much as Tegan needed Ryn, Ryn needed Tegan more. With Tegan Ryn grew and she learnt a new concept of love.

I knew if I left my little girl with my best friend she wouldn’t grow up exactly the way I would have done it but she would have grown up as amazing as her “aunty”.

The thing is kids need love but adults need it more. Be it from their parents or their children but definitely their best friend because only a best friend “is someone who when you show up at their door with a dead body they say nothing grab a shovel and follow you.”

I always believed a best friend is the one who knows exactly what makes you tick or what will make your blood boil. The ones who listen to you drone on when you are in the “honeymoon” period of a relationship or pick up the phone at 3am because you’ve done something you shouldn’t have (and come on we’ve all been there.

A best friend can be in your life for 1 year, 5 years or like in my situation 20 plus years but it’s not the time that is relevant but the presence. The being there for the good times but also when shit hits the fan. Adele and Ryn went through so much separately and as best friends went through the hardest test. Now don’t get me wrong over the years me and my best friend have had more ups and downs than the big one at Blackpool but I know deep down (as does she) that we will always step up when necessary.

So to those best friends and to my best friend there is only one word I can say and that is “Siempre”.
